- Typesetting by computer is preferred but not required. Be sure your
manuscript is legible, whether notated by hand or by computer.
- Use only one side of the paper. Allow adequate margins and sufficient
space between staves and systems.
- Use correct music notation. For accepted notational style, composers
are advised to consult a reference book on notation or to study the
publications of The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited for examples.
- Indicate sections or movements of a work clearly with number or
title.
- Indicate the level of difficulty of the piece (e.g., early intermediate,
Grade 3) and, if possible, the duration.
- For book proposals, send a sample chapter and table of contents
only.
- Number pages clearly, and put your surname on each page.
- You may submit either hard copies or PDFs. A recording of the work
is helpful, but not required. Do not send hard-copy originals; our
receipt of your manuscript will be acknowledged but the manuscript
will not be returned.
- Package your manuscript securely enough that it will not be damaged
in transit.
- Include a covering letter introducing yourself. In the case of music
submissions, briefly outline the content and scope of your work. For
book manuscripts, indicate your credentials and expertise in the subject
area. In all cases, describe what is special and unique about your
manuscript in fulfilling the mandate of The Frederick Harris Music
Co., Limited.
Our editorial committee meets regularly to review submissions. Manuscripts
that pass our initial screening are then sent to an external reviewer.
The evaluation process may take several months depending on the scope
of the material. In the event that we decide not to accept your work,
we will notify you of our decision but the manuscript will be destroyed.
If your work is accepted for publication, then you will receive an
author/composer contract that specifies conditions for submitting the
final manuscript, as well as other relevant terms such as royalty rate
and territory of copyright.
Once a manuscript is accepted for publication and a publication contract
has been concluded, the manuscript is edited for style and accuracy
and returned to the author for corrections. The corrected manuscript
is then typeset. The music typesetter prepares proofs, which are subsequently
checked by the Editorial and Production departments and the composer/author.
The typical period between acceptance of the manuscript and publication
is nine to twelve months. |
